A Minecraft Movie

Four misfits are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into a bizarre cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home they’ll have to master this world while embarking on a quest with an unexpected expert crafter.

My whole life video game movies have sucked. Whether it was because the story wasn’t as interesting as a movie, or because the movie changed too much of the story from the game, they always sucked. Until recently. The Sonic movies are great, Mario made a billion dollars, and of course The Last Of Us became one of the greatest TV shows I have ever seen in my life.

That all is to say that finally Hollywood has cracked the code on how to adapt video games. So when Minecraft was announced I was excited. How would they do it I thought? Have Steve be a CGI character voiced by Jack Black? Probably. I mean how else could they do it, and I was excited for Minecraft something that was not just a big part of my childhood, but my twenty year old cousins childhood and my little ten year old cousins childhood showing the generational appeal this brand has. But, unfortunately this movie doesn’t profit from Hollywood cracking that code and is actually a step backward not forward.

So as soon as I saw that first trailer I knew what this movie was gonna be, a cashgrab. This movie is so dumb. I love Jack Black but him as Steve does not work. It just feels like they put Jack Black in a blue shirt and told him to be himself. And that’s all it is! And so many other characters you just don’t care about because the movie doesn’t even try to give them any interesting character arcs! And dude, there is a character in this movie who’s name is literally THE GARBAGE MAN that’s not even a joke that’s his name.

Sure there are some funny moments here and there, the director Jared Hess did do a goob job shooting the movie, and Jack Black and Jason Momoa have good chemistry, but ultimately this movie feels like it came from an alternate universe where video game movies stayed bad. However, I do think if you watch with the right mindset, you can have fun with it, because it is fun bad. However it’s still bad.
