Shelter

On a remote coastal island, a former assassin living in self-imposed exile rescues a young girl from a deadly storm. As their lives start to intertwine, he must protect the orphan while battling enemies from his past.

Shelter was a movie I was looking forward too for quite a while. I love Jason Statham and am glad action movies is a genre that has stayed in theaters unlike comedy or rom coms and as soon as I saw the trailer I was excited. It wasn’t a masterpiece of a trailer or anything like that and it didn’t look like an exceptional action movie, but it did look like a pretty good action movie. Plus I thought the angle of him having to care for a little girl would be interesting and something I haven’t really seen. I will say though, as someone who loves Jason Statham, he has been making some bad movies the last couple years. I hated Meg 2, Expendables 4 is supposed to be unwatchable, I didn’t bother with The Beekeeper because of how dumb it looked, and A Working Man was unwatchable crap. So was this a solid action movie, or another movie that makes me think that Jason Statham needs to fire his agent. Well I am happy to say that for the most part, this is a solid film that FINALLY has Jason Statham in a good movie.

Shelter is a mostly pretty solid action movie. Jason Statham is great and a total badass all around. He has good chemistry with Bodhi Rae Breathnach (who plays the little girl) who is also decent. The action scenes are pretty solid especially the hand to hand fight scenes which are awesome. The car chase is great too, and there is a very inventive and solid beach fight scene. The first half off the movie is pretty entertaining as well. It’s pretty much all character stuff devoid of any action and even that is entertaining as well.

However I have some issues. One, Noami Ackle is a great actress who is completely wasted in this movie. She has a super one dimensional role, the way he confronts the bad guy is super anti climatic and the ending is super dumb. But I’ll talk more about that in the spoilers section.

  SPOILERS

Since he’s innocent and he killed the guy framing him why wouldn’t he come out as innocent and live his life with the girl, like his CHARACTER ARC was setting him up to do??? It makes no sense that he would stay on the run far away from her. It’s dumb and is incredibly underwhelming. Also I just wanna say that in the credits the girl’s uncle is just named “Uncle” they were too lazy to GIVE HIM A NAME. Seriously how lazy do your writers have to be to not give an important character a name. It’s the easiest thing they could have possibly done!

But other than that, I liked Shelter and IMPLORE Jason Statham to make more movies like this. Ya know, good ones instead of the crap from the last couple of years. But seriously though Shelter is a pretty good action movie. It’s not an action masterpiece like the John Wick films but it is a pretty good action movie that I recommend if thats a genre you like. It’s not the kind of action movie that will make someone who’s not into them a massive action fan, but it will satisfy action fans looking for a good new action movie.
